Production of CEA usually stops before birth. It is usually present only at very low levels in the blood of healthy adults. Although smokers have higher level of CEA, every raised level is considered to be dangerous.

CEA levels may be raised in pancreatic carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, lung carcinoma, breast carcinoma, and medullary thyroid carcinoma. Raised levels may also indicate ulcerative colitis, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, COPD, Crohn's disease and hypothyroidism.
